UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
Established in 1994 as the Barcelona Program Scholarship fund, this award was renamed in 1999 for Professor Pasquariello who established our department's Barcelona Study Abroad program and a scholarship endowment for students studying in Barcelona. This award is intended for students who have been accepted in the Barcelona Year Abroad program.

ALVARO MONSERRAT LLARDÉN SCHOLARSHIP IN CATALAN STUDIES
Through a generous bequest from the Monserrat family in memory of Alvaro Monserrat Llardén, the Department is able to offer a scholarship in support of the study of Catalan language, linguistics, literature, and culture. This award is open to any student, undergraduate or graduate, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Requirements are that the recipient engage first and foremost in the study of the Catalan language and, after language study has begun, that the recipient take at least one course per semester in which Catalan language, linguistics, literature, or culture are included. (The required work in Catalan language itself satisfies the per-semester coursework requirement.) Applications available each Spring semester.

PAUL W. BORGESON STUDY-ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP
Paul W. Borgeson was a professor of Latin American literature in the SIP department from 1981 until his death in 1999. Paul’s family, his wife, Mary, and his children, Jennifer and David, endowed this scholarship in Paul’s memory to honor his career and to encourage like-minded undergraduates to study in the countries of Central and South America. Applications available each Spring semester.

BONNIE S. JUGENHEIMER SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1985 in memory of the former student Bonnie S. Jugenheimer. The award is given to an outstanding student in Spanish, with preference to one in the BAT Program. No applications are solicited for this scholarship. The outstanding student is identified by faculty among the graduating BAT students each spring.
JOSEPH S. FLORES AWARD
This award was established in 1995 in memory of Joseph S. Flores. The award is given to an outstanding undergraduate in Hispanic Studies. No applications are solicited for this scholarship. The outstanding student is identified by faculty among the graduating Spanish major students each spring.
BASTIAN SCHOLARSHIP
Bastian Scholarship for Study Abroad, created specifically for undergraduates who are studying to become foreign language teachers at Illinois.

This fellowship was established by an alumna of our department who earned her PhD in Spanish (SLATE) and specialized in second language reading research.

BEST GRADUATE PAPER AWARD
For best paper written by a SIP graduate student on a topic in the field of linguistics or literature in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or Catalan.

TINKER FIELD RESEARCH GRANT COMPETITION FOR GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH IN LATIN AMERICA AND IBERIA
The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies offers this summer research grant to provide graduate students with their initial exploratory experience in developing independent research projects and conducting field research in Latin America or Iberia.
Intended to support graduate and undergraduate study in modern foreign languages in combination with area studies, international studies, or international or area aspects of professional studies.

LEMANN GRADUATE FELLOWHISP FOR BRAZILIAN STUDIES
The Lemann Institute of Brazilian Studies offers research fellowships to graduate students doing research about Brazil.
Students who have had a paper selected for presentation at a professional conference may apply to the Graduate College for travel funds. Graduate College Travel Grants are relatively modest (usually $60-$300 for domestic conferences) and are awarded on a competitive basis. No student will be funded by the Graduate College for conference travel more than once in any academic year. The Graduate College deadlines for application typically fall in late September (fall semester) and late February (spring semester); these are announced on the Graduate College website (http://www.grad.uiuc.edu). The Department deadline is 2 weeks earlier.
The guidelines outlined in 1.7.3 must be followed in the preparation of the proposal. Typically, a brief abstract (250-375 words) is required. Proposals must be turned in to SIP by the departmental deadline which is typically two weeks earlier than the SLCL deadline and three weeks earlier than the Graduate College deadline. All proposals and documentation must be approved by the student’s advisor.
When sufficient funding is available, the Department may consider proposals not forwarded to the Graduate College for smaller grants.

Dissertation Travel Grants provide reimbursement to subsidize travel and associated costs necessary for doctoral dissertation research, whether for exploring a potential dissertation topic (i.e., before extensive research has been done) or for conducting dissertation research.

SLCL DISSERTATION COMPLETION FELLOWSHIPS
Twice a year the Graduate College holds competitions for Dissertation Travel Grants (for exploring a potential dissertation topic or for conducting dissertation research) and for On-Campus Dissertation Research Fellowships (for those who have passed the prelims). A competition for Dissertation Completion Fellowships is also held in the spring; those who have passed their preliminary exams will be given preference in this competition as well. These competitions are announced on the Graduate College webpage (http://www.grad.uiuc.edu), as well as by e-mail to all graduate students and by written notices posted on the department bulletin board.

PRESIDENT'S DIVERSITY TRAVEL AWARD
This competitive award will provide a certificate and funding, not to exceed $500, for either undergraduate or graduate/professional students to travel to a professional conference between November 1, 2010 and October 31, 2011. Based on campus size, awards will be presented to two students on each of the Urbana and Chicago campuses and one student on the Springfield campus. These conference travel awards are intended to support student candidates who will be presenting papers, posters, or creative work at conferences related to issues of diversity or identity, such as those involving race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, and national origin. application
