Placement and proficiency testing

The placement exam for Spanish is taken on-line through the Center for Teaching Excellence.  The results indicate where a student should begin with Spanish coursework at UIUC.  The placement exam does not give course credit. The on-line test is for incoming freshmen and transfer students only. Students should receive information from CTE prior to their first semester of enrollment. All students with experience in Spanish are urged

to take this exam, even if they do not intend to take courses in Spanish at this time. The Placement Exam is a pre-requisite for taking the Proficiency Exam and a minimum score is required before admittance to the Proficiency Exam.

The proficiency exam for Spanish is taken in person at a designated time/place through the Center for Teaching Excellence and can give students up to 8 hours of credit in Spanish (Span 103, Span 141).  The Spanish proficiency test is offered once during Fall semester and once during Spring semester (immediately at the start of each semester). Only those students who have never taken a college/university Spanish course are eligible for the test. For more information on signing up and the test date, click on the name above to access the link.
